Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What if there is no dial tone?
Answer: If there is no dial tone (-48 V) coming from the Panel port on LNI to your panel but all the LEDs indicate normal operation or if the panel is sending alarms but the LNI doesn't sense the off-hook, please confirm that the 12 VDC input is OK
Q, Will it work through a home grade router/firewall?
Answer: Yes. The LNI is the initiator therefore firewalls allow the communications without intervention.
Q, Can I download software from LoBenn?
Answer: Yes, LoBenn provides a ftp site that may be access by customers to download software and documentation. Access to the site is described in the release notification that are sent out as part of the product delivery process.
Q, Do you have to open up any TCP or UDP ports on a router/firewall and if so, what ports?
Answer: Not on the LNI side because the LNI is the call initiator.
On the LNS, you must open a specific port and NAT to the Ethernet port on the LNS. see documentation for the specifics.
Q, Will it affect the operation of a home or business network?
Answer: Imperceptible when idle, but bandwidth is used (see next question) when the panel is communicating with the receiver, impact depends on how big a proportion of the modem capacity is used.
Q, How much bandwidth is required?
Answer: Nearly zero if the panel is idle, approx 95Kbps when sending an alarm. The duration of this bandwidth usage depends on the Protocol that the Alarm panel is using to communicate to the Monitoring Center.
Q, If I am downloading a large file or there is other heavy network traffic, will an alarm still be transmitted successfully to the monitoring station?
Answer: If the communications is disrupted, it will continually try again until the alarm eventually gets through. The panel will never behave as though it has sent a successful alarm unless it has received the real kiss-off from the receiver.
Q, What if the IP address at my home or business changes occasionally or is dynamic and changes often?
Answer: The LNI initiates the communication with the LNS. This process identifies what IP address the LNS should respond to. A new link is re-established in seconds automatically.
Q, If I utilize a DSL circuit that requires a PPPoE login and I don't have a router (my computer does the PPPoE login) how does the device communicate?
Answer: A router is required as part of the installation.
Q, Is the data transmission encrypted?
Answer: Yes.
Q, Will the LNI maintain Line Seizure on the telephone line?
Answer: When the LNI is in normal operation the phone line will remain usable even during an alarm reporting situation. If the network is interrupted and the LNI goes into relay bypass mode, the phone line will be seized during an alarm event so that the alarm will be transmitted.
Q, What formats can the LNS communicate with the Alarm Monitoring software in for system or network (ISP) alarms?
Answer: Contact ID.
Q, Is it ULC approved or will it be and what level of ULC Burg certification?
Answer: ULC Listed for S559-04
Q, Will it work on, or in conjunction with a DVAC circuit as a primary or backup path.
Answer: Yes, there are some specific configuration requirements that need to be addressed. Please contact support@lobenninc.com for the details.
Q, Can I backup the configuration of an LNS to tape, a network drive or another such device and restore it to new LNS?
Answer: The LNS can be backed up to all common back-up devices and restored from same.
